In a 2012 report commissioned by HP and published by the Ponemon Institute, it is estimated that that the total cost of cyber crime for an analyzed sample of about 200 companies across the five countries ranges from $3.2 million in the U.K. to $8.9 million in the U.S. Cyber attacks worldwide have increased in frequency, speed and sophistication. They are difficult to detect and often occur without early warning. According to Symantec's 2011 State of Security survey, cyber security is the top risk for businesses for the second year running, ahead of traditional crime, natural disasters and terrorism.
